Rubel equalled the best bowling record in a one-day international by a Bangladeshi bowler as he took 6-26 from 5.5 overs – including a hat-trick – that saw them triumph in the first of the three-match series.

The 24th over in Mirpur was momentous for the 23-year-old  as he dismissed Corey Anderson, Brendon McCullum and James Neesham in successive balls to become the third Bangladeshi to take an ODI hat-trick.

He knocked Anderson's middle stump out of the ground, had McCullum caught at backward point and finished off having Neesham caught behind after a brilliant catch by captain Mushfique Rahim.

After losing the toss, Bangladesh were put into bat, but they were able to set a competitive total thanks to Mushfiqur Rahim and Naeem Islam.

The pair came together with the score at 25-3 after Tim Southee (3-34) had removed openers Tamim Iqbal (5) and Anamul Haque (13), however Rahim and Islam dragged Bangladesh out of trouble with a partnership of 154.

After Islam's departure the hosts could only add 33 in the remaining five overs, with James Neesham (4-42) taking two of the final four wickets.

New Zealand also made a stuttering start to their innings with the loss of Hamish Rutherford for one in the fourth over of their reply.

Anton Devcich (22) and Ross Taylor (8) both followed Rutherford back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers too much and the tourists found themselves 82-3 at the end of the 20th over.

However, their response was halted by rain and when they were able to return their target had been reduced to 206 from 33 overs.

New Zealand came back out and struck 39 off 21 deliveries before Rubel ended their challenge. His hat-trick gave Bangladesh control of the match as they took the final four wickets for 39 runs.
