Roy the boy for England

JasonRoy

A powerful top-order batsman, Roy was the leading scorer in England's domestic Twenty20 competition this year, thumping 677 runs at a strike-rate of 157.

The South Africa-born 24-year-old, who moved to the UK at the age of 10, will now hope to make his international bow after being rewarded for his fine form with a place in a 14-man squad.

Roy and England were given a scare when the batsman hurt his hand in action for Surrey against a New Zealand A-team on Sunday, just hours after his selection was announced.

However, a tweet from the county later in the day read: "Result of X-Ray on Jason Roy's right thumb is badly bruised but no fracture."

And Roy himself posted on the social media platform "Fully fit and ready to go, very proud of my call up and thanks everyone for the messages."

Eoin Morgan will captain England in the absence of regular Twenty20 skipper Stuart Broad, with the paceman set to undergo surgery on his injured right knee.

In addition to Roy, England have named three players who missed out on selection for the ongoing one-day international series with India.

James Taylor, who has previously represented his country at Test and ODI level, could make his international T20 debut, while there are also places for Ravi Bopara - a surprise omission from England's 50-over squad - and Tim Bresnan.

Ian Bell and Michael Carberry, both part of England's team for their last T20 against Sri Lanka in May, have each been left out.

National selector James Whitaker said: "This one-off NatWest International T20 provides us with an opportunity to look at players who have impressed recently in domestic cricket and gives them a chance to test themselves on the international stage against high-quality opposition."

England squad: Eoin Morgan (captain), Moeen Ali, Ravi Bopara, Tim Bresnan, Jos Buttler, Steven Finn, Harry Gurney, Alex Hales, Chris Jordan, Joe Root, Jason Roy, James Taylor, James Tredwell, Chris Woakes.
