Pakistan respond strongly

The second Test between Pakistan and South Africa is heading for a draw, after the 'home' side continued the run fest on Monday in Abu Dhabi.

Forced to play their scheduled home fixtures on neutral turf due to safety concerns, Pakistan duly threw caution to the wind in the face of the Proteas bowling attack as they batted their way back to respectability to be 317-6 in reply to South Africa's 584-9 dec.

Azhar Ali led the way with 90 before failing to paceman Dale Steyn, who has claimed three of the six Pakistan scalps thus far.

Captain Misbah-ul-Haq was unbeaten at the close of play on 77 from 150 deliveries. Asad Shafiq was another half-century maker — out for 61 — but his side still trails by 267 runs.

Pakistan would have been disappointed not to finish in a stronger position after they lost the wicket of Adnan Akmal in the day's third-last over, caught at short leg by Hashim Amla off the bowling of spinner Paul Harris.

Despite their heroics, Pakistan are yet to avoid the follow-on heading into day four. They need another 68 runs on on Tuesday to ensure they make the Proteas bat again, which would make a draw the likely outcome.
