Older teammates no issue for Aussie captain Steve Smith

Steve Smith

PREVIEW: Second Test: Australia v India

Smith will on Wednesday become the third youngest cricketer to lead the national Test side.

The 25-year-old will skipper teammates with vastly more first class experience, including former vice captain Brad Haddin, 37, Chris Rogers, 37, and Ryan Harris, 35.

"I've had a bit of leadership experience with NSW and the Sydney Sixers," Smith said.

"I know at the Sixers I had some older heads there.

"To lead those guys, it was a big thrill for me."

Smith has captained NSW in three first class matches, including the Sheffield Shield final earlier this year when he scored a ton as the Blues recorded a draw to win the competition.

"As a captain, I think first and foremost I'll try to lead from the front with my performance on the field," he said in Brisbane.

"And in regards to tactics and everything, I think we've been pretty good this year. Pup's (Clarke's) been amazing with what he's done.

"I don't feel there's any real need for a big change there."

Smith debuted as a leg-spinning allrounder at age 21, but cemented his spot in the side as a dependable batsman over the past 18 months.

The right-hander has scored 1490 runs at an average of 51.37 in 18 Tests since earning a recall during Australia's woeful tour of India last year.
