The hosts put on 37 without loss before the close of play in the first Test on Wednesday, but it was Shami's display with the ball that grabbed the headlines.

While the 23-year-old sparkled on his Test bow at Eden Gardens, Sachin Tendulkar - playing in his penultimate Test match - also had a moment of glory by trapping Shane Shillingford lbw for just five.

India tore through the West Indies openers, with Marlon Samuels' knock of 65 providing some respite for the visitors, before he was bowled by the superb Shami (4-71 from 17).

Shikhar Dhawan (21) and Murali Vijay (16) are set to resume at the crease on day two.

West Indies captain Darren Sammy opted to bat first after winning the toss, and that decision appeared a good one with Chris Gayle (18) and Kieran Powell (28) the only two victims as West Indies reached lunch at 2-107.

India completely dominated the second session, however, claiming five wickets for just 85 runs to leave West Indies reeling.

Samuels was dropped by MS Dhoni on 60, but Sharma took his middle stump in the 44th over, before Tendulkar's dismissal of Shillingford closed the session.

Ravichandran Ashwin took just four overs to find the breakthrough after the interval when he caught and bowled Veerasammy Permaul (14), before the same bowler accounted for Shivnarine Chanderpaul's dismissal for 36 when he clipped off stump.

And the innings was sewn up with Shami taking his fourth wicket. Sheldon Cottrell tried to play down leg side, but the ball clipped the bat, bounced off his pad and removed off stump.

Dhawan and Vijay made a steady start to the innings, with the former hitting four boundaries, meaning India continue on day two with all 10 wickets intact.
