Moeen credits Tredwell influence

Moeen Ali - Cropped

All-rounder Moeen Ali said the man he replaced in the England XI - James Tredwell - has helped him refine his off-spin bowling.

Moeen returned to the Test side for the first time since August, finishing the second Test against West Indies with four wickets, as the tourists chalked up a nine-wicket win in Grenada on Saturday.

The 27-year-old, who averages over 28 with the bat and under 28 with the ball, replaced Tredwell after arriving in the Caribbean following the drawn first Test.

"Tredders is a brilliant guy. He was obviously disappointed not to play this game but he never once made it look like he was disappointed at me," Moeen said, as reported by The Telegraph.

"He's given me a lot of tips during the game and it was similar during the World Cup when he wasn't playing and I was the spinner."

Moeen said Tredwell's strong outing in the first Test in Antigua - he took five wickets, including 4-47 in the first innings - was a benchmark.

"I was bowling well in the nets and felt like I was ready," he said.

"But the pressure of Test match cricket and bowling at good Test players, it was completely different.

"With James Tredwell having bowled so well in the first Test match, I wouldn't say there was pressure but I felt I needed to bowl well and probably forced it a little bit.

"The last couple of days I spoke to [coach] Peter Moores and [assistant] Paul Farbrace and they just told me to relax and enjoy it, and that's exactly what I did."

Moeen's only innings on his Test re-call ended in disaster as he ran himself out for 0.

"I was really looking forward to batting on this pitch [in Grenada] - until I ran myself out - but hopefully in Barbados I can get some.

"The bowling's been almost a revelation to me, even in the one-day stuff it keeps me in the side as an opening batter.

"I still feel there's a lot more of my batting to come, I just haven't justified it."
