The designated hosts eased to a 221-run victory in the opening game of two despite boasting an inexperienced bowling attack due to the suspension of Saeed Ajmal and fitness issues plaguing Junaid Khan, Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Irfan .

Spinners Zulfiqar Babar and Yasir Shah - who now have just four caps between them - stepped up, claiming five and four wickets respectively to dismiss Australia, pursuing a nominal 438, for 216 in their second innings.

Misbah said: "It is really important to consolidate now. We haven't won a series against Australia in so long [20 years].

"That's a big incentive for us, all the guys are determined to do well against them and we need to play disciplined cricket.

"We really did well in every department in this Test and that really helped us put Australia under pressure.

"These bowlers are young at international level, but they have a lot of experience in first-class level.

"They know how to bowl longer spells and build pressure. Their temperament was wonderful. This will really give a lot of confidence to the youngsters who've just joined us."

Those new players were aided by a stunning performance from veteran Younis Khan - who, with the World Cup just months away, was surprisingly omitted for the limited-overs series prior to this rubber.

Younis' response was exceptional as he struck two hundreds and became his country's most prolific centurion with 26.

He said: "My family motivated me. I am thankful to them. I wanted to come back after the results in ODIs and T20.

"I worked with [batting coach] Grant Flower for a week. We tried out a lot of different things. I got hit in the ribs and shoulder. I was ready for them. This win will take us a long way."
