Former Australia captain Michael Clarke has called for Shaun Marsh to be given an opportunity to open the batting.

Clarke announced his retirement from international cricket after Australia lost the fourth Ashes Test against England,  which saw them meekly surrender the urn.

That was followed by an exodus of players including wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, all-rounder Shane Watson, paceman Ryan Harris and opening batsman Chris Rogers.

Clarke believes that Australia have several options to partner vice-captain David Warner at the top of the order, but feels that 32-year-old Marsh - who averages of 33.11 from 15 Tests - should be at the head of the queue.

"I think they will pick and stick," Clarke told Cricket Australia's official website. "I think they will keep the faith.

"I think they probably need to now, because we've lost five guys who have walked away from our last series.

"I would like to see Shaun Marsh certainly get an opportunity. I still think he has got a lot of runs left in him."

Clarke, who opted not to play for for Melbourne Stars in the upcoming the Big Bash League, says no decision has been made on when he will return to domestic cricket.

"I haven't spoken to anybody in regards to committing to any sort of cricket at this stage," the 34-year-old added.

"When I announced my retirement I knew I was doing it for the right reasons. I thought hard about it before making the decision.

"I'm really comfortable with that, I have no regrets. I haven't thought about cricket too much since I've come back to Australia. I've made it pretty clear I want some time away from the game."
