Marsh aims to prove his worth

Prodigious all-rounder Mitch Marsh says he is finally ready to start fulfilling his enormous potential after he was a surprise selection in Australia's Champions Trophy squad.

The 21-year-old made his one-day international debut as a teenager against South Africa in October, 2011.

However, several off-field indiscretions and a serious hamstring injury suffered last November have prevented the son of former Test opener Geoff Marsh from adding to that lone appearance.

But fresh from a solid if not spectacular Indian Premier League tournament with Pune Warriors, Marsh is feeling good about his game and is ready to cement a spot in Michael Clarke's one-day side.

"I'm looking forward to playing the 50-over format over in England so hopefully I can get an opportunity and hopefully I can take it," Marsh said.

"I'm looking forward to representing Australia again, it's been a long time with a few injuries, so I can't wait to get over there (England).

"I feel good. It was a great experience to go over to the IPL again.

"Pune, as a team, didn't do too well but I learned a lot playing over there and hopefully I can carry some of that form over to England.

Pressed on whether he fancies his chances of getting a start in Australia's Champions Trophy opener against England on June 8, he replied: "I'd like to hope so.

"If I do get an opportunity it'll be batting mid to lower order, hopefully finishing off the innings and bowling a few overs here and there.

"But I'll wait and see and find out when I get over there. I'll be doing everything I can to push for selection."

Australia have been drawn against England, New Zealand and Sri Lanka in the group stage.

"Obviously it's a tough group," Marsh said.

"It'll be very exciting to play against England, with the Ashes coming up there will be a lot of hype around that game.

"In this tournament every game is very important so we're going to have to start very well and hopefully we can get through to the next stage."
