Samuels welcomes English-like conditions

West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels said his preparation was the key to his excellent innings on day one of the second Test against England.

Samuels made an unbeaten 94 as his team finished Tuesday at 188-5, having earlier slumped to 74-4 at the National Cricket Stadium in Grenada.

The 34-year-old revealed watching and analysing the early part of the innings was crucial to his ability to adapt to the "English conditions".

Samuels has scored 407 runs at an average of 67.83 in four Test matches in England.

"I spent a lot of time looking at every ball they bowled with the analysts upstairs so it was just like English conditions and I've scored a lot of runs in England," Samuels told the West Indies Cricket Board.

"And so I took an English approach by leaving alone a lot of balls and letting the ball come to me as late as possible on a slow track with the ball moving around."

There was also other motivation for Samuels, who said he was further inspired by the sledging coming from England.

"I'm one who likes a battle and going out to bat knowing the conditions are difficult," he said.

"With the English players talking a bit kind of motivated me a bit more to dig deep and come up and try and bat out the entire day and put West Indies in a very good position."
