Last Test could not have gone better – Clarke

Australia captain Michael Clarke took heart from his final international match going very much to plan as his side eased to a consolation win over England in the fifth and final Ashes Test.

The tourists had only pride to play for at The Oval after surrendering their grip on the famous little urn when falling 3-1 down in the series at Trent Bridge earlier this month.

Nevertheless, Australia proved much the better side in London, romping home by an innings and 46 runs to give Clarke – and fellow retiree Chris Rogers – an excellent send-off.

"The last Test, I don't think it could have gone any better to be honest," said Clarke, who will be replaced as skipper by Steve Smith, at the post-match presentation.

"The way the boys came out and played in this Test match is a great reward for the hard work we've put in throughout the tour.

"No doubt Alastair (Cook) and the England team deserve a lot of credit.

"They've won the Ashes and they deserve to have won.

"They've outplayed us in this series and we're just happy that we were able to come out in this Test match and show that determination and grit and play that good Australian brand of cricket, and fortunately have some success as well.

"Obviously, there was disappointment after we lost the series – but that shows the true character of these players, to be able to still get up for this game and come out and perform at our best."

Australia now face a rebuilding period, following a fourth successive away Ashes defeat, but Clarke expressed confidence in the team's ability to move forward under Smith.

"This team here is as good a team as people as I've played with," Clarke added.

"I love their work ethic, I love their dedication to try and get better every single day and I think Australian cricket is in great hands under Steve Smith and with the players in this team.

"Steve Smith will make a fantastic captain."
