Jonathan Trott retains England ambition

The 33-year South African-born right-hander last featured for his country in the first Test against Australia in Brisbane 10 months ago, after which he left the Ashes tour with a stress-related condition.

Trott's name was absent as expected when the England and Wales Cricket Board released their latest list of 12-month central contracts last week.

But, following an aborted start to his initial comeback in April, he has hit a rich vein of form at county level.

Last time out against Northamptonshire, Trott struck a second County Championship century of the season and he has also reached three figures twice in the One-Day Cup - helping Warwickshire progress to Saturday’s Lord’s final against Durham.

Victory would complete a sensational limited-overs double after Edgbaston club claimed the T20 Blast crown on home turf last month and Trott is also tentatively looking towards a possible second coming at the highest level.

"The ECB and I have had our final get-together. I've been signed off by the ECB," he told BBC WM.

"Whatever comes along with regards to selection, maybe. I'm not putting too much pressure on myself.

"There's been some challenging times," he said. "Some tough times. But I've been available a while, for the last month or two, I suppose, in terms of selection and I'm enjoying my cricket.

"I've been feeling good for a while now. It's been great going back to Warwickshire. The last couple of months with Warwickshire have been fantastic."

In Trott's absence, Gary Ballance scored three centuries and as many half-centuries during this year's home Test matches against Sri Lanka and India.

Home one-day international series defeats to the same opponents demonstrated that England have found it much harder to fill Trott's pivotal number-three position in the shorter format.
