England's leading Test wicket-taker James Anderson was disappointed the tourists could only draw with West Indies in the opening Test on Friday.

Anderson eclipsed Ian Botham's record of 383 Test wickets as West Indies ended the match 350-7, 88 runs adrift of victory in Antigua.

The 32-year-old paceman, who moved to 384 career Test wickets after claiming figures of 2-72 in the second innings, dismissed Marlon Samuels and Denesh Ramdin to give England hope but the hosts held on for a draw thanks to Jason Holder and his unbeaten 103.

"We got ourselves into a great position. I thought we got in a bit of trouble with the bat in the first innings having lost the toss," Anderson told Sky Sports.

"[We] got ourselves back in the game, great hundred from Belly [Ian Bell]. Great hundred from Gaz [Gary Ballance] in the second innings. Got ourselves in a good position but couldn't quite find anything whatsoever in that pitch to get the 10 wickets.

"We tried our hearts out, gave it everything today. All the guys bowled well but we couldn't quite get it done."

As for the record, Anderson said he was proud to surpass Botham after claiming the wicket of Ramdin late on.

"My immediate thought was that we were back in the game, that we'd opened an end up to get a sniff of winning the game," Anderson added.

"But when we got together as a group and the guys started congratulating me it started to sink in then, which was nice.

"A lot of my mates were out there and great that my family were there too."

The second Test will take place in Grenada, starting on Tuesday.
