Injured Clarke could play first Test

Clarke suffered a recurrence of his hamstring injury in the first one-day international against South Africa on Friday.

It ruled the star batsman out of the remainder of the five-match ODI series, which Australia lead 2-1.

Reports suggested Clarke could also miss the four Tests against India and the tri-series which included the two nations and England.

But Australia physio Alex Kountouris is hopeful Clarke could be ready for the Gabba Test starting December 4 in Brisbane despite refusing to put a timeframe on his return.

"I'm still hopeful that he might be right for the first Test because that's two weeks away, but we need to review it again next week," he told a news conference on Thursday.

"He needs to start running and start doing things before we make a decision on whether he's OK to play."

Kountouris said a recurrence – and Clarke's troublesome back – meant it was hard to grade the injury.

Asked if Clarke would play a part in the summer, Kountouris said: ""I'd like to think so.

"We're not looking that far ahead. We're just trying to get him right at the moment to see what he's going to be available for.

"It's not dramatic where he's going to miss the whole summer – not with this current injury."
