India set to tinker in Kolkata

The hosts' dominant six-wicket victory on Sunday secured an unassailable 3-0 lead in the best-of-five series, making the fourth installment a dead rubber.

With the series already wrapped up, India are now set to ring the changes to have a look at other alternatives with the 2015 ICC World Cup, which starts in February, in mind.

Virat Kohli will continue to captain the side in the absence of regular skipper MS Dhoni, who has a thumb injury.

Shikhar Dhawan and Ravindra Jadeja have also been rested, while Varun Aaron, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma were all omitted from India's latest squad announcement on Monday.

That means the likes of Kedar Jadhav, seamer Vinay Kumar and leg spinner Karn Sharma could get a chance to stake their claim for a regular spot in the squad.

India are also set to hand part-time wicketkeeper Robin Uthappa the gloves to explore options should regular keeper Dhoni need rest periods at the World Cup.

For Sri Lanka, the match represents little more than a chance to restore some pride after a poor series that has seen them well beaten in all three contests.

Mahela Jayawardene impressed with a 118 that accounted for almost half of India's 242 all out in the third ODI in Hyderabad.

The knock took him past 12,000 runs in the 50-over format, but only three other batsmen made double figures.

After the latest loss, skipper Angelo Mathews expressed his disappointment at the failure of his top and middle order batting line-up, and particularly the attitude of the team's younger players.

"We made this series to carry out experiments, especially with the World Cup coming up," he said.

"But we are known for the brand of cricket we play and I'm not satisfied by the attitude of the younger players.

"They have failed to step up as the seniors have done and we expect more from them.

"We failed twice but were hoping to do better in the third game. But we were not up to it. Besides Mahela and [Tillakaratne] Dilshan others failed to impress at Hyderabad. The youngsters need to step up."
