The ECB announced on Tuesday that Pietersen, who is England's record international run scorer, has been dropped for the upcoming limited-overs tour of the West Indies and March's ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh.

News of Pietersen not being selected comes after England's humiliating 5-0 Ashes defeat to Australia and the departure of coach Andy Flower.

ECB managing director Paul Downton said England will "look to the future" and "rebuild" in the wake of the decision to omit the 33-year-old.

However, former England captain Hussain thinks the ECB needs to be more transparent and disclose the real reasoning after months of speculation regarding dressing-room unrest.

"It has been an incredible winter really and nothing seems to surprise us anymore," Hussain told Sky Sports.

"There were rumours about things going on behind the scenes but they were only rumours and speculation.

"It's a bold move when you go without one of your best players, a man of 8,000 Test runs, so there must have been things behind under the scenes.

"It would be nice to know from the ECB what those things are or were but obviously England are going to have to rebuild without Kevin Pietersen now.

"I always feel it is about man-management.

"However disruptive a player is, you can still try and manage most players. Kevin hasn't really got a word to stand on. Where ever he has been, he has been a problem.

"Eventually English cricket have said enough is enough.

"Some people believe in cutting out the virus and moving on and some say just man-manage your players. There is no easy solution.

"England certainly aren't a better team without Kevin Pietersen. They are going to have to take some pain.

"If you are going to leave out your best player, they should give reasons.

"The ECB should be a bit forthright otherwise people will be saying 'What's going on?'"
