Hurricanes storm into last four

Xavier Doherty's performance was typical of a disciplined Hurricanes bowling effort in the Group B match in Mohali.

The left-arm orthodox spinner finished with figures of 4-27 from four overs, a return that helped restrict the Tridents to 113 all out - the lowest total posted by a side batting first in this year's Champions League.

A slow pitch contributed to a low-scoring game, but Shoaib Malik's unbeaten 39 from 35 balls kept the Hurricanes ahead of the required run-rate and they wrapped up victory with 10 balls to spare.

The Hurricanes' bowlers found plenty of swing in the early stages and Doug Bollinger (2-27 from four) struck early to dismiss Neil McKenzie for a duck, before Ben Hilfenhaus (2-14 from four) accounted for Raymon Reifer (6) and Dilshan Munaweera (18) with consecutive balls in the fifth over.

Jonathan Carter provided some entertainment for the Tridents with a swashbuckling 42 that included three fours and two sixes, but the likes of James Franklin (12), Jason Holder (5), Akeal Hosein (12) and Ashley Nurse (1) all failed with the bat.

Carter, who struck a superb 111 not out in the Tridents' defeat to Cape Cobras last time out, was eventually deceived by a flighted delivery from Doherty and played straight into the hands of Bollinger at short fine-leg.

The rest of the tail was dismissed with relative ease, although the Hurricanes made an inauspicious start to their chase when Kyle Mayers (1-9 from one) accounted for Ben Dunk (0) with the fourth delivery of the opening over.

A 31-run partnership from Tim Paine (18) and Aiden Blizzard (21) settled Hobart, and Shoaib then took on a leading role with a well-paced innings from number four.

Jonathan Wells (23 not out) provided able assistance and the Tridents' fate was sealed when Shoaib collected four through midwicket in the penultimate over.
