Hales backs under-fire Broad to bounce back

Alex Hales has backed England and Nottinghamshire team-mate Stuart Broad to bounce back from his disappointing form in time for the Ashes later this year.

The seamer took just four wickets at the Cricket World Cup as England crashed out in the group stages and has not made a strong start to their tour of the West Indies.

Broad was dismissed for a duck in the first Test, and returned 3-128 with the ball in a game that saw England left to settle for a draw despite dominating throughout.

But, speaking at the launch event for the T20 Blast, opener Hales said: "The last few years, people always put the pressure on him [Broad] and he always delivers a big performance.

"I think that's the way he works. I think he thrives under the pressure and I think come the summer he will be back to bowling at his best.

"Hopefully we're going to see the best of him because we're going to need him against two tough teams [New Zealand and Australia]."

Opener Hales found his opportunities limited at the World Cup as he was restricted to appearances against Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

"One of my targets is to try and nail down that spot in the ODI team at the top of the order," Hales added.

"As a team we're not hiding behind the fact that we're embarrassed about what happened [at the World Cup]. When you look at the quality of our squad there's no excuse not to make it out of the group stages at least.

"On a personal level it was frustrating. I was sort of in and out of the team and never really got a consistent run at the top of the order. Looking forward to the summer, hopefully I can get that.

"Not many of our guys do get exposed to the IPL, a lot of the guys in the squad haven't played in the Big Bash either.

"Other teams are constantly improving their T20 skills all the time and that's something we didn't necessarily have in our squad in the World Cup and maybe we did get found out with that.

"The Australians, Kiwis, in the middle overs they've got no fear in pumping seamers back over their heads and maybe we did play with that fear in the middle overs, probably didn't hit enough boundaries, and that's something we're going to have get better at."
