Hafeez boost for Pakistan

Mohammad Hafeez

The 33-year-old missed the one-day international series defeat against Australia after damaging the webbing between the thumb and index finger on his left thumb while fielding during a warm-up match in Sharjah earlier this month.

Hafeez, who needed five stitches to repair the damage, batted in the nets this week and proved he is able to return ahead of the two-match Test series that begins in Dubai next Wednesday.

Doctor Sohail Saleem, general manager of sports medicine for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), said on Thursday: "I have examined Mohammad Hafeez while batting at the nets.

"He batted about half an hour without support and any signs of discomfort. For the previous two days, he had been batting with the help of support.

"On examination after batting his wound was completely dry and the edges of the wound have closed without any sign of inflammation. The strength of all the muscles around the thumb also seems to be fully restored.

"In my opinion he is ready to play. It is however advised that he should use support while bowling and fielding for the next few days."

The PCB are awaiting scan results and medical reports on knee-injury victims Junaid Khan and Wahab Riaz.
