Mohammad Hafeez pressed on to a maiden double-century as Pakistan opened up a commanding advantage on day three of the first Test against Bangladesh.

Resuming with 137 to his name in Khulna, Hafeez continued to torment the hosts and had led his side into the lead by the time Shuvagata Hom (2-112) finally got rid of him for 224.

Hom also claimed the wicket of Azhar Ali (83) on a day that was otherwise a test of endurance for Bangladesh, who will come back on Friday with another tough assignment - namely breaking a 69-run partnership between Asad Shafiq (51) and Sarfraz Ahmed (51).

Pakistan reached stumps on 537-5, leading by 205 and well placed to push for victory.

Having made 332 in their first innings, Bangladesh's hopes of restricting Pakistan's response already looked bleak when the tourists ended the second day on 227-1.

The first breakthrough on Thursday saw Azhar removed, his middle stump sent flying by a delivery from off-spinner Hom.

There was little else for Bangladesh to celebrate, though Younis Khan (33) was also sent packing 20 overs later as Taijul Islam (3-116) took the veteran's off stump.

The 96th over of the innings produced a moment to savour for Hafeez as a swept two brought up his 200, prompting an emotional celebration from the 34-year-old.

When he finally fell, it was to a sharp catch from Mahmudullah at leg slip, but Pakistan were already seven ahead at the time.

Skipper Misbah-ul-Haq (59) made a solid contribution before being caught at deep backward square-leg off Taijul, but Shafiq and Sarfraz combined to strengthen Pakistan's position by the close of play.
