Jason Gillespie has confirmed productive talks between himself and Andrew Strauss have taken place over the England coaching role.

The Yorkshire coach has been widely tipped to replace Peter Moores as national team coach after winning the County Championship last season, with Strauss admitting he was a contender for the role.

As England toiled in the field against New Zealand at Lord's, Gillespie revealed he had met the director of England cricket and was encouraged by the discussions.

"I've spoken to Andrew and the ECB about the vacant position," Gillespie told Sky Sports News.

"They it made it very clear they're chatting to a number of people of interest, so they'll let us know what the process is in due course. At this stage there's nothing more to say.

"It was face to face [with Strauss] and we had a good chat and we'll see what pans out from there."

Moores departed on the same day Strauss was announced in his new role, with the search for his replacement beginning immediately.
