Gibbs loses Proteas contract

Herschelle Gibbs' international career appears over after his contract with Cricket South Africa was terminated by mutual consent.

Gibbs, 36, caused controversy with the release of his autobiography in November, in which he alleged that drug use and group sex involving former team-mates occurred on tour with the Proteas.

The book was critical of current South Africa captain Graeme Smith, who Gibbs described as the leader of a clique that controlled the dressing room under former coach Mickey Arthur.

Gibbs has not featured for South Africa since an ICC World Twenty20 match against Pakistan in May.

His deal was expected to run until April 2011, but CSA have now revealed an agreement has been reached to end the contract ahead of schedule.

"It has been decided this is the best way forward for both parties," CSA chief executive Gerald Majola said in a statement on Friday.

"On behalf of CSA I would like to wish Herschelle all the best for his future and to thank him for the contribution he has made to the successes of the Proteas over an extended period of time."

"Because of the sensitivity of the matter as well as the confidentiality agreements signed between the parties, the matter is now closed and there will be no further comments."

Gibbs, who made his Test debut against India in 1996, struck 14 centuries en route to 6,167 runs in the five-day format, at an average of 41.95.

His highest score will remain at 228, made against Pakistan in Cape Town in 2003.
