Fringe Proteas look to press World Cup claims

The Proteas, fresh off the back of a nine-wicket win over Zimbabwe in their one-off Test last week, face three one-day internationals against the same opponents in Bulawayo, with the first of those taking place at the Queens Sports Club on Sunday.

Frontline pace bowlers Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander and Morne Morkel have all been rested for the upcoming games but are expected to return for the ODI triangular series, which begins on August 25 and also includes Australia.

Also resting up at home are Dean Elgar, Stiaan van Zyl, Alviro Petersen and new spin sensation Dane Piedt - who took a record 8-152 in his Test debut last week.

That means that while South Africa have kept their formidable batting line-up intact, their bowling attack is largely comprised of peripheral players.

And, with the World Cup just six months away, the likes of Wayne Parnell, Kyle Abbott, Marchant de Lange and debutant Mthokozisi Shezi have the opportunity to impress and put their names in the picture for a place in the squad.

Zimbabwe, meanwhile, will hope to put the disappointment of a 2-2 ODI series draw with Afghanistan behind them.

They welcome back fast bowler Brian Vitori - who returns after a year out with injury - and will also be able to call on newcomers Luke Jongwe and Neville Madziva.

Off-spinner John Nyumbu became only the second Zimbabwean to take a five wicket haul on Test debut against South Africa last week and will hope to replicate that success in the ODIs.

The same goes for wicketkeeper-batsman Brendon Taylor - who scored a fine first-innings 93 against the full-strength South African seam attack.
