The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will hold a news conference at Lord's on Saturday, at which Moores is expected to be confirmed as England's new man in charge for all formats of the game.

Moores is believed to have beaten off competition from Ashley Giles, Mick Newell, Trevor Bayliss and Mark Robinson for the right to lead England.

Flintoff, a part of the playing squad when the 51-year-old last held the position between April 2007 and January 2009, took to Twitter on Friday to show his support for Moores, while also suggesting - perhaps light-heartedly given his lack of coaching experience - that he had shown an interest in the position.

A tweet from Flintoff read: "I applied for the job, but to be fair there was only one option. Peter Moores is a fantastic coach, motivator and man. Good luck Sir !"

Paul Farbrace, coach of recent ICC World Twenty20 winners Sri Lanka, has been strongly linked with a role as assistant to Moores, whose first stint with England ended in acrimonious fashion following a public fall-out with then-captain Kevin Pietersen that saw both men lose their positions.

Pietersen is no longer part of England's plans having been dropped in the aftermath of a woeful tour of Australia, during which team director Andy Flower stood down to open up the vacancy at the helm of English cricket.
