England overcame rain and determined batting to seal a 2-0 series victory over New Zealand with a 247-run win at Headingley on Tuesday.

Alastair Cook's bowlers came to the fore on the final day, with Graeme Swann adding two more wickets to finish the innings with 6-90, while Stuart Broad and James Anderson dismissed the two remaining batsmen.

After a 45-minute delay, the tourists began the final day on 6-158, needing to score a largely immaterial 310 runs to win. However, within three overs, Broad gave England the start they needed by dismissing Brendon McCullum.

The New Zealand captain tried to drive a full delivery from the fast bowler but failed to connect properly and, although the ball kept low, Broad was able to dive forward to take a fine catch.

Some good hitting from new batsman Doug Bracewell and Tim Southee added 56 runs to the visitors' total before Swann put England within touching distance of victory.

The spinner saw one chance dropped from Southee by Jonathan Trott at slip, but two overs later the same pairing made no mistake. Swann drew Southee forward with a delivery outside the off stump which caught the outside edge and was happily scooped up by Trott at first slip.

More rain forced an early and extended lunch break, but once the match was back under way, Swann had his sixth wicket as Bracewell was caught at short-leg by Ian Bell.

A stock delivery spun more than the batsman was expecting, coming off the face of the bat after hitting his pad first, and it was held low down by the Warwickshire man.

A stubborn final-wicket partnership between Neil Wagner and Trent Boult frustrated England, but after 48 balls without scoring, Anderson finally secured the victory.

The Lancashire paceman was too quick for Boult as he nicked a thick edge through to Matt Prior, who took a simple catch to seal a fine series whitewash.
