England pick Tremlett

Chris Tremlett will replace Stuart Broad in the England side for the third Ashes Test, starting in Perth on Thursday.

Surrey man Tremlett, a right-arm medium-fast bowler, has been chosen ahead of Yorkshire duo Tim Bresnan and Ajmal Shahzad.

England may have opted for the 2.01m Tremlett in the hope the 29-year-old's considerable height will elicit bounce from the WACA wicket against Australia.

The loss of Broad to a torn stomach muscle after the second Test in Adelaide is a blow not only to England's bowling attack but also to the length of the batting order.

The 24-year-old has contributed over 1000 runs at an average of 28.10 in his 32 Test matches.

Bresnan, also a right-arm quick, was believed to be in consideration due to his abilities with the bat, but his inclination towards swing bowling - similar to that of the first-choice James Anderson - may have counted against him.

Tremlett, who has not appeared at Test level for three years, will be making his fourth appearance in the long form of the game.

All three of his previous appearances came against India in 2007, when he collected 13 wickets at 29.69.

England will take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series and successfully defend the Ashes with victory in Perth, while Australia need to win to keep the contest alive.
