Three batsmen reached 50 on Saturday as the hosts cruised past India's first-innings target and ended the second day of the final Test on 385-7, with Joe Root unbeaten on 92.

Root followed on from the good work by Alastair Cook (79) and Ballance (64) earlier in the day as England dominated proceedings, while India were left frustrated at another long day in the field.

Since defeat at Lord's, England have upped their game to dominate every session in the following three Tests and that trend continued throughout Saturday.

Ballance, who shared a 125-run partnership with Cook for the second wicket, praised the continued efforts from the batsmen and was delighted at the position that England themselves with three days of the Test remaining.

"Obviously it's a great position," Ballance told the England and Wales Cricket Board website.

"We bowled brilliantly [on Thursday] and batted well towards the end of the day and then we've carried on the momentum.

"We've got ourselves a lead of 230-odd and a great position. We've worked hard for it but the job's not done yet and we're going to have to bowl on that.

"I think it [performance] has improved after the loss at Lord's since then everyone has contributed, from one to 11 lads are scoring runs and taking wickets so that is helping a great deal."

The 24-year-old praised Yorkshire team-mate Root for continuing his impressive form in the series, but was disappointed not to make more runs himself.

"I felt good out there, I had a nice partnership with Cooky and a bit disappointed not to get to three figures but that's how it goes," he added.

"Rooty's come in, played well with Jos [Buttler] and the others and hopefully he can go on to get a big hundred.

"If it wasn't for him we could only have a 150-run lead, which is still good, but he's carried on, scored quickly towards the end of the day and really put us in a good position."
