England fume over David Warner recall in ODI loss to Australia

Warner scored 65 in a decisive 163-run opening partnership with Aaron Finch, but only after he was given a reprieve on 22 when he appeared to caught behind by Jos Buttler off Ben Stokes.

Buttler claimed he gloved the low chance and Warner honourably accepted the wicketkeeper's word and walked during the first one-day international on Sunday.

However, Warner paused at the boundary's edge when the replay showed the catch may not have carried.

He stood there leant on his bat for about three minutes as third umpire Kumar Dharmasena deliberated, and was eventually recalled to the wicket.

Whenever there is uncertainty over a dismissal, it is a long-held custom for the batsman to receive the benefit of the doubt.

The English press have slammed the decision and suggested it cost England the match.

Captain Alastair Cook was also frustrated.

"It might be my biased English eyes but I thought it was a clean catch, that it was taken and it bounced up," Cook said.

"I only saw it a couple of times on the big screen. I thought it was the wrong decision, but obviously we have to respect the umpire's decision. Otherwise you can get in trouble."

Man-of-the-match Finch said he was unsure whether the ball carried.

"From the non-striker's end you can't tell too much," Finch said.

"I think the third or fourth umpire came out and said they were looking at it 'so stay on the field'.

"Davey obviously took Jos' word and he is a very honest guy and a very nice guy."
