Waugh: KP should remain banished

Kevin Pietersen - Cropped

Former Australia captain Steve Waugh said England should stand by their decision to overlook Kevin Pietersen.

Discussion is raging around whether or not England should recall the Surrey batsman, who last played international cricket on the dismal tour of Australia in 2013-14.

England will start their bid to regain the Ashes when the first Test gets underway in Cardiff on July and Pietersen is determined to play a part.

In his first County Championship outing since being discarded by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2014, Pietersen made 19 for Surrey on Sunday after making 170 in a pre-season match last week.

Waugh believes England should stick to the stance they have taken with Pietersen and not offer the 34-year-old a recall.

"I think it would be a strange move to say, '12 months ago, Kevin Pietersen's not right for the team and for whatever reason is not in the side' [and then re-select him]," Waugh said.

"What has he done since that time to get back into the side, or justify that? We all know he's been a world-class player.

"I think England have got to make a clean break and look forward to the future. I think Australia did that a couple of years ago, and that paid dividends.

"Sometimes you've got to have short-term pain to get the long-term gain.

"Personally, I don't think I'd go back to what was happening before. They obviously made that decision for a reason. Unless that reason has changed, then they shouldn't go back to what they had before."
