With captain Clarke at a local hospital having scans on his right hamstring after injuring it in the middle session, India lost 8-110 in the final session to trail 1-0 down in the four-Test series.

Lyon was the chief destroyer, finishing with figures of 7-152 off 34.1 overs to take 12 wickets for the match and secure his first 10-wicket Test haul.

The off-spinner bowled without luck in the first two sessions but removed Murali Vijay (99) and Ajinkya Rahane (zero) in the same over after tea before snaring the prize scalp of skipper Virat Kohli for a brilliant 141 as he was nervously caught in the deep by Mitchell Marsh.

Fittingly, Lyon claimed the winning wicket as Brad Haddin stumped Ishant Sharma for a duck to bowl the tourists out for 315 and spark emotional celebrations.

Lyon edged out Kohli and team-mate David Warner, who both scored twin tons, for man-of-the-match honours.

Warner dedicated the win to his fallen mate Phil Hughes after the match, with the series to resume in Brisbane on Wednesday.

Clarke appears unlikely to play any further part in the series after admitting the results of scans conducted on Sunday afternoon were 'not fantastic.' The skipper’s place in Australia’s World Cup side now has to be in serious doubt.

Clarke had been battling a left hamstring problem related to a chronic back injury – one that flared up on the first day as he tried to avoid a bouncer - but his latest injury is to the right hamstring in a worrying sign for the 33-year-old.

He suffered the injury fielding a ball during the middle session.

Clarke moved to his left, bent down to pick up the ball on the run and set himself to throw it immediately but appeared to tear his hamstring.

He pulled up quickly before slumping to the ground and left the field moments later alongside team physio Alex Kountouris.
