Dhoni to take a rest

India have hastily arranged five home ODIs with Sri Lanka after West Indies' players dramatically ended their tour due to payment structure disputes with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and West Indies Players' Association (WIPA).

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Tuesday that legal proceedings will be initiated against the WICB "due to the abrupt cancellation of this tour", while also announcing that all future bilateral tours between the two countries stand suspended.

For now, India will turn their focus to Sri Lanka, who will play matches in Cuttack, Hyderabad, Ranchi, Kolkata and Ahmedabad, with full details of the itinerary yet to be announced.

Dhoni will sit out the opening three matches, in order to freshen up ahead of his side's tour to Australia and the subsequent ICC World Cup.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has also been rested, while chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav misses out after failing to earn a maiden international cap in the recent ODIs against the Windies.

Wriddhiman Saha is challenged with taking on Dhoni's duties behind the stumps and there is also a recall for pace bowler Varun Aaron and experienced spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, the latter having been rested for the West Indies series.

Rohit Sharma, who fractured the middle finger on his right hand in August, will get the opportunity to prove his fitness in a warm-up game against the touring Sri Lankans in Mumbai on October 30.

India squad for first three ODIs against Sri Lanka: Virat Kohli (captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, Wriddhiman Saha, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammad Shami, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra, Murali Vijay, Varun Aaron, Akshar Patel.
