David Warner to sit out Zimbabwe tour

Warner's partner is expecting later this year and the left-hander, currently playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League, should be back in Australia for the birth.

He announced on his official website on Friday that he would miss the one-day series against South Africa and Zimbabwe in August and September, a decision supported by coach Darren Lehmann.

"It's been a long, long few months for me, from the Ashes summer to (Tests in) South Africa and then (the world Twenty20 in) Bangladesh," he said.

"And I'm looking forward to a break following the two-week training camp that will be waiting when I get back to Australia at the start of June.

"That's why I'm grateful that Cricket Australia has suggested that I sit out the tri-series against South Africa and Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe that is scheduled to start in late August.

"Candice and I have our baby coming in September, so it's fantastic to be able to have that time off.

"Since Darren Lehmann came on board as coach he's told us all that family comes first, and that's a big thing because we're on the road for a long time.

"So that any time a major personal matter crops up – whether it's a family member being sick, getting married or having a baby – the exemption is there for you."

Warner said that the decision would have been difficult to make if he was asked to choose between the tour or family, given the upcoming ICC World Cup.

Australia will host the 50-over event in early 2015 and Warner said he did not like missing out on playing for his country in normal circumstances.

"With the World Cup coming up next year and the fact that it's an ODI tri-series in Zimbabwe, I would normally immediately put my hand up for selection," he added.

"That's because playing for Australia is what I've always wanted to do since I was a youngster and you never want to miss an opportunity."

Warner also admitted his "batteries are slowly draining" after an outstanding period of form in late 2013 and early 2014.

The aggressive batsman hit five centuries in eight Tests as Australia embarrassed England 5-0 in the Ashes before they went to then-world number one South Africa and won 2-1.

Australia now hold top spot in the ICC's Test rankings.
