Clarke in line for Test return

Captain Clarke was ruled out of the upcoming one-day international series against Pakistan earlier this week with a hamstring injury sustained in August.

The 33-year-old picked up the problem in Australia's tri-series opener against Zimbabwe last month, before aggravating it in the match, with Phil Hughes called up to replace Clarke against Pakistan.

Team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris feels the first Test in Dubai on October 22 could see Clarke make his return but warned the skipper will not be rushed back into action.

"We think the time frame to play the first Test is realistic and at this stage things seem to be going on track and he's likely to be available," Kountouris told the Cricket Australia website.

"We're planning that he's not going to miss it but he's not a sure thing to play it either.

"He's not going to play unless he's right.

"That will involve him getting back to full training, running at high speed and us having the confidence that he's OK."

Clarke's Australia team-mate Mitchell Johnson has suffered with a rib problem in recent months and will be forced to wait to make his Champions League Twenty20 bow with Kings XI Punjab.

Kings XI are due to open their campaign against Hobart Hurricanes on Thursday but will not be released by Australia until a decision is made on his fitness.

"Due to medical advice Mitch has not been released to play in the CLT20 tournament at this time," said CA executive general Manager team performance Pat Howard.

"A decision on his release to play for the Kings XI will depend on how he responds to treatment."
