Queensland have lost skipper James Hopes for Wednesday's domestic one-day clash with Victoria after re-injuring a thumb injury during training.

Hopes was struck on thumb at the Bulls' session on Tuesday, the same thumb that he injured while steering Queensland to a Sheffield Shield win over South Australia last week.

While have X-rays cleared Hopes of a break he has decided against playing the Bushrangers at the MCG on Wednesday.

Hopes, who has been replaced by allrounder Jason Floros, remains hopeful of being fit for the Shield clash with Victoria starting on Friday.

"He was in a fair degree of pain as you would expect," Bulls coach Trevor Barsby said.

"He showed plenty of ticker to get us home against the Redbacks in the Shield match last week but it was asking too much for him to play tomorrow."

"The good sign is that there is no fracture."

"So we will see how he comes along tomorrow and Thursday and then decide with the selectors whether he is okay for the Shield game starting on Friday."

Wicket-keeper Chris Hartley will captain the Bulls for the split-innings one-day game for the first time this season.
