Bravo challenges Windies batsmen

All the talk ahead of the first ODI of the series on Wednesday was regarding the departure of Windies coach Ottis Gibson by mutual consent just hours before the game.

Team manager Richie Richardson stepped in as coach on an interim basis after Gibson's four-year tenure came to an end in the build-up the three-match series.

A difficult day looked set to end with a shock defeat when the hosts slumped to 34-5 in reply to Bangladesh's 217 all out at the National Cricket Stadium in Grenada.

Kieron Pollard's sublime quickfire 89 from only 70 balls and 74 from wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin spared the West Indies' blushes, though, as they won by three wickets with just over 10 overs to spare.

A victory at the same ground on Friday would wrap up a series victory with one game remaining, but captain Bravo has urged his frontline batsmen to provide a more solid platform.

He said: "I am very happy with the total the guys kept the Bangladesh team to, but we all still need to dig deeper and not depend on the lower order to help us win matches.

"Our bowlers more often than not deliver for us, so it is time for the batsmen to do so as well. We want to play aggressive, fearless cricket.

"We have some important players in our set-up, like (Chris) Gayle and Pollard, and the management back them no matter what the situation. The style and brand we are looking for is to get back into the old-time days."

Anamul Haque's 109 had given Bangladesh hope of winning their first ODI match of the year, but they were unable to finish off the job after having the Windies on the ropes.

Captain Mushfiqur Rahim believes the tourists are capable of ending their wait for a win in the 50-over format of the game on this tour, but knows that Bangladesh must raise their game.

"It is not impossible to win here, but we have to do the right things, and not only in a short space of time, but we need to do it over a longer period," he said.
