The 21-year-old Brathwaite has long been tipped for stardom after making his Test debut in 2011 and is starting to turn potential into performances.
Two three-figure scores in his last three Tests indicate just that, with Brathwaite – a former Under-19 captain for West Indies – following up an innings of 129 against New Zealand in June with a mammoth 212 not out in his side's big win against Bangladesh last week.
Brathwaite's double-century set the platform for a big first-innings total of 484-7 in St Vincent and West Indies went on to post a comfortable 10-wicket win and take a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series.
The youngster will be required to shoulder more responsibility in the second match, though, after opening partner Chris Gayle pulled out of the squad.
Gayle has been given permission to leave West Indies' camp by the country's cricket board to deal with a "personal matter".
Guyana batsman Leon Johnson has replaced Gayle in the squad and is set to be thrust into action at the top of the order.
His inclusion marks the only change to West Indies' 13-man squad for their 500th Test.
Bangladesh are sure to make at least one alteration to their team after Imrul Kayes was ruled out due to a skin infection.
"Imrul is out of the second Test," Bangladesh manager Habibul Bashar told ESPNCricinfo.
"We have kept him in the hotel. We will take him to the doctor and see if he is healthy enough to fly back home."
Kayes' spot is likely to be taken by Anamul Haque.
Bangladesh seamer Al-Amin Hossain could keep his place despite being reported for a suspect bowling action this week.
Al-Amin needs to be tested within 21 days but is not suspended until the process is complete.
The 24-year-old failed to take a wicket in the first Test.
Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim impressed in the defeat, backing up an unbeaten 48 in their paltry first-innings score of 182 with a dogged 116 in the second dig.
He needs more support from the top order, though, if Bangladesh are to cause an upset.
Bangladesh have beaten the West Indies twice in Test cricket but both wins came in 2009.
Of the 11 clashes between the two in the game's longest format, West Indies have won seven – including the last four.
