Phil Hughes guided New South Wales to an upset victory against Tasmania in their Ryobi One-Day Cup clash at West Park Oval in Burnie on Saturday.

The former Test opener made an unbeaten 80 from 114 balls as the Blues reaching their target of 190 with just three wickets down after the Tigers managed just 8-189 from their 45 overs.

It was the second loss in week for competition leaders Tasmania after they succumbed to South Australia at Bellerive Oval on Thursday.

Brett Lee continued his recent fine form with three wickets, while Stuart Clark, Nathan Hauritz and Moises Henriques were the other wicket-takers.

Batting first Tasmania recovered after losing Mark Cosgrove and Alex Doolan early. Skipper George Bailey combined with Ed Cowan to see the hosts through to the break at 2-65.

In reply, Dave Warner hit 44 from 56 balls as NSW built a 20-run first innings lead.

Tasmania's second innings got off to a bad start when George Bailey (29) was caught behind the wicket off the bowling of Moises Henriques.

Cowan was then involved in his second run out of the day when Travis Birt (5) was caught short of his ground.

Brett Lee then gave the Blues the upper hand when he dismissed Luke Butterworth (8) and Cowan (58).

A late-innings fightback from Jason Krejza (25) and James Faulkner (28) at least gave the Tigers something to defend.

But the Blues were never headed as man-of-the-match Hughes and Steven Smith (32 from 31 balls) finished the job.
