Bishoo: I never gave up on West Indies re-call

Devendra Bishoo - Cropped

West Indies leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo said his hard work earned him a re-call, after his first involvement in Test cricket in three years saw him impress.

Bishoo, 29, returned to the West Indies XI for the first time since April 2012 for the second Test against England, and made 30 with the bat before finishing day two with figures of 0-16 off seven overs.

In his 12th match, Bishoo - coming in at number 10 - made his highest Test score, helping West Indies from 246-8 to 299 all out.

In reply, England got off to a solid start at 74-0, but Bishoo was delighted to be back in the Test mix after a prolonged hiatus.

"First of all, I never give up - I was working hard at home, bowling, batting, fielding, everything. I had a good regional tournament," said Bishoo, who snared 40 wickets in six matches for Guayana in February and March.

"I'm very, very, very happy to be back here. I never think that I'm not going to come back, I always have the belief that I'm going to be back here."

Bishoo denied the suggestion the pitch in Granada was improving, after West Indies struggled to 188-5 on stumps on day one - before the hosts' tail made 73 between them, and England's openers Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott got starts.

"Not really, it's green and it's a flat pitch so you just have to make use of it as much as possible," Bishoo replied, when asked if the conditions were getting better for batting.

"As the game goes by, the ball is going to be spinning a bit more."

Bishoo confirmed the first ball of his fourth over could have been his first wicket, with Devon Smith missing a chance at first slip to dismiss Cook - with the ball eventually going for four, taking the England skipper to 33.
