Bailey revels in Pakistan whitewash

Australia

The tourists stayed top of the ICC ODI rankings by securing a dramatic one-run victory in Abu Dhabi to secure a 3-0 series victory, with Glenn Maxwell (2-41) defying the odds to bowl a double-wicket maiden in the final over of the match with Pakistan needing only two to win.

Man of the series Steve Smith made 77 and David Warner added 56, but Bailey thought his side would be up against it after they were all out for 230.

Pakistan's misery continued, though, as they fell agonisingly short of a consolation victory when Mohammad Irfan was caught off the final ball from Maxwell, who was named man of the match.

Bailey admitted Australia had failed to match the high standards they have set themselves, but the batsman was more than happy that they had done enough to get the job done.

He said: "It's always tough to win series overseas so it's very satisfying to win 3-0. We didn't quite play our best in all three games, but it's a positive when you find ways to win despite that.

"It was a lot slower than what we expected and a little bit of dew later in the night. Another wonderful innings from Steve Smith and Davey Warner, but I thought we were 20-30 short."

Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi knows his side must learn harsh lessons after suffering yet another defeat with the ICC World Cup on the horizon.

"First of all I want to appreciate my bowling unit, they bowled really well."

"In the batting, from the first T20 till the last ODI, the thing we are missing is partnerships. We are not finishing properly. This game we had to win and we missed the opportunity. The World Cup is not very far, and we have to learn quickly, it's the most important thing for us."
