Nathan Lyon hopes Australia can pay their respects to Phil Hughes with victory in the third Test against New Zealand, which starts on the first anniversary of his death.

Hughes passed away after a Sean Abbott delivery caught him on the side of the head while batting for South Australia in a match against New South Wales last year.

Lyon admitted the shadow of losing their former team-mate will hang over the final Test, which gets under way next Friday, and wants to channel that emotion by clinching a series victory.

"It's going to be tough times, there's no doubt about it," he said.

"We've lost a mate and it's been 12 months since then. It's another opportunity to go out and pay our respects to Phil Hughes.

"We can go out that and pay our respects by putting on a black armband and also by playing well and winning this Test match. It's going to be a sad time.

"It's like losing anyone, a close friend or family member, it's tough. There's no point hiding behind it."

The spinner is looking forward to using the pink ball in the sport's first day-night Test in Adelaide, suggesting it could offer him an advantage.

"Perfect, the batsman can't see the seam so it's going to be pretty interesting," he added.

"It's no different for me bowling with a red ball, white ball and a pink ball so I'm not going to change my plans.

"It's just about getting out there, executing and being consistent."
