Australia seal tri-series title as England falter

Mitchell Johnson returned to haunt England with a destructive spell of bowling as Australia secured the tri-series title with a 112-run win in Perth.

Having been England's chief tormentor in the last Ashes series in 2013-14 it was deja vu for the tourists as the fast bowler ripped through the top order, generating pace and bounce at the WACA.

Johnson (3-27) removed James Taylor (four), Moeen Ali (26) and captain Eoin Morgan for a duck to hand Australia control of the one-day international, before Glenn Maxwell (4-46) wrapped things up with a flurry of late wickets.

Australia had been grateful to Maxwell with the bat as well earlier in the day as his 95 helped rescue a worrying situation for George Bailey's side.

With the ball the hosts looked in complete control as England once again faltered at the hands of their old enemy, losing their last wicket in the 40th over to complete a heavy defeat.

Victory caps a memorable weekend for Australian sport after the nation's football team lifted the Asian Cup on Saturday for the first time.

Things could have been so different for the tourists after making a great start to the match thanks to James Anderson (2-38) and Stuart Broad (3-55).

Dangermen Aaron Finch (zero) and David Warner (12) were removed early as Anderson quickly found his rhythm, and when Bailey (two) and Steve Smith (40) joined them back in the pavilion inside 18 overs the hosts were 60-4.

However, that was Maxwell's cue to ride to Australia's aid as a 141-run partnership with Mitchell Marsh led their recovery - the former contributing 90 runs to the duo's match-changing tally.

Maxwell was back to his destructive best as he crashed 15 fours from 98 deliveries, and a late onslaught from James Faulkner (50 not out) lifted Australia to a competitive 278-8.

Like their hosts, England started badly as Johnson and Josh Hazlewood (2-13) made regular breakthroughs at the top of the order.

After Hazlewood had removed Ian Bell for eight, Johnson ripped through Taylor, Ali and Morgan with the score only advancing by 11 runs.

Joe Root (25) did his best to revive England with Ravi Bopara (33), but partnerships were not lasting as they continued to throw wickets away with slack shots.

Broad showed some fight with a swashbuckling 24 from 20 balls, but it was all in vain as Hazlewood removed Steven Finn (six) to seal the series win for Australia.
