Anderson stars as England take series lead

James Anderson had a hand in six of the eight West Indies dismissals on Saturday as England secured a nine-wicket win on the final day of the second Test in Grenada.

With the hosts resuming on 202-2, the draw looked the most likely outcome at the start of play, but an inspired Anderson swung matters decisively in England's favour.

The seamer picked up three more wickets with the second new ball to finish with 4-43, took two catches and effected a superb run-out as West Indies fell from 224-2 to 307 all out.

That left England needing 143 for victory and they eased home with more than 17 overs to spare to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Captain Alastair Cook and Gary Ballance both made unbeaten half centuries in a relatively untroubled chase, but it was Anderson - fresh from becoming England's leading Test wicket taker in the first match in Antigua - who stole the headlines once again.

The Windies started well enough until Kraigg Brathwaite, who began unbeaten on 101, was ousted by a sharp bouncer from the Lancashire paceman for 116 - man of the match Joe Root pouching the catch at slip.

Anderson soon removed the usually stubborn Shivnarine Chanderpaul for seven, Cook taking a fine one-handed catch on the juggle after Ian Bell spilled the initial chance.

In his next over, Anderson accounted for Marlon Samuels (37), who nicked through to Jos Buttler when trying to leave the ball.

Even when not bowling, Anderson was heavily involved in the action, pulling off an excellent leaping catch at mid-off to get rid of Jermaine Blackwood for 10, with Chris Jordan (1-69) the beneficiary.

At that point the Windies had fallen to 257-6, and three runs later they were seven down, Anderson moving to his left and running out Jason Holder (2) with a direct hit at the non-striker's end.

Kemar Roach (10) was next to go, Anderson taking a simple chance off the bowling of Moeen Ali, who removed both Denesh Ramdin and Shannon Gabriel lbw after lunch to finish with 3-51.

With 59 overs to make 143 and the weather set fair, England were in no rush to reach their target, although they had to overcome the early loss of Jonathan Trott for a duck as he dragged a Gabriel delivery onto his stumps.

There was cause for concern for the hosts when Holder fell awkwardly in bowling to Ballance and had to be carried from the field on a stretcher, with the Windies later confirming he had sprained his left ankle.

Ballance - dropped on three occasions - finished 81 not out to go with his first-innings 77, while Cook ended on 59 to round off an impressive win.
