Warriors on track

Warriors on track

02/11/2012 05:15:30 AM

Western Australia are on track to post a reasonable total in their Ryobi One-Day Cup clash with Queensland at the Gabba, having posted 3-120 after 25 overs.

Adam Voges (33 not out) and Marcus North (26 not out) are in control, with their partnership of 56 runs helping the visiting side overcome some early hiccups.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Warriors began their innings at pace but the fall of two cheap wickets early on derailed their promising start.

Shaun Marsh was the first to go for just seven runs, edging to first slip off the bowling of the competition's leading wicket-taker, Alister McDermott.

Marsh's replacement didn't last much longer as, two overs later, Travis Birt was run out for a three-ball duck after a mid-pitch mix-up with electric opener Liam Davis (35), making his WA 50-over debut.

On shaky ground at 2-31, the Warriors settled with 21-year-old Davis and old hand Voges at the crease combining for a solid 33-run partnership.

But tight bowling from Bulls pair, spinner Brad Ipson and rising star Ben Cutting, slowed their run rate and frustrated the WA side - and eventually the breakthrough came.

Cutting was the destroyer, luring Davis into lashing away at a full delivery - but he only feathered the ball and 'keeper Ben Dunk was there to glove a key wicket.

With youngster Davis back in the sheds, Voges and North both stepped up to fill the void, the former bringing up the Warriors' 100 with a cracking drive down the middle to end the 21st over.

The Queensland attack certainly helped out the visitors, with their bowlers adding an incredible 19 runs in sundries at the midway point of the innings.

The least economical of the lot was Chris Swan (0-46 off 8 overs, 3 wides), while wicket-takers McDermott (1-25 off 7 overs, 3 wides) and Cutting (1-18 off 5 overs, 4 wides, 1 no ball) were also culpable for the extras.
