Victoria piles on pain

Hussey stars as Vics pile on pain

03/20/2010 04:37:42 AM

The Bushrangers' relentless charge towards a second successive Sheffield Shield title has also spawned an important personal milestone for veteran batsman David Hussey.

At tea on day four of the final against Queensland at the MCG, Victoria was 5-521, leading by 569 runs overall with four sessions to play.

That's not a bad turnaround for a side that was 6-75 in its first innings in the second over after lunch on the opening day.

What it effectively means for the Vics is that they have their 28th Shield title in the bag.

But it's also been a landmark day for Hussey who plundered an imperious 168.

Not only did the 32-year-old emulate his achievement of 12 months ago when he scored a century in last year's final, but when he reached 156 on Saturday, Hussey became the competition's leading run-scorer for the season, surpassing Tasmanian opener Ed Cowan's tally of 957.

Hussey's dismissal 30 minutes before tea - caught by a tumbling Lee Carseldine at cover point off Ben Cutting - leaves him with 970 Shield runs for the season at 57.06.

Resuming on 63 with Aaron Finch, who was 54 overnight, Hussey immediately took a fancy to the left-arm orthodox darts of part-timer Chris Lynn who opened the bowling for the Bulls.

Hussey smashed two sixes off Lynn and one off Cameron Boyce in the first 20 minutes of play to advance at run-a-ball pace from his overnight score of 63 to his century from just 110 deliveries.

Finch was the only batsman to fall in the opening session, run out for 63 by a direct hit from 12th man Jason Floros, deputising for the injured James Hopes.

With a century there for the taking, Finch will be cursing his impetuousness for taking on the substitute's arm for the sake of a single.

Hussey tempered his approach after being given a life on 111 when dropped by Wade Townsend at cover off Luke Feldman, leaving it to skipper Cameron White to take the initiative in the period to lunch.

White maintained a steady pace after lunch and was well within reach of a century of his own when he was bowled by Boyce off an inside edge in the over after Hussey's dismissal.

Andrew McDonald (19 not out) and Matthew Wade (20 not out) added 40 in quick time before tea and will be looking for more fast runs afterwards.
