Victoria has claimed a record 457-run victory in the Sheffield Shield final against Queensland at the MCG after a dominant fifth day which saw the Bulls dismissed inside two sessions.

Chasing an impossible victory target of 640, Queensland was bowled out for 182 after starting the day 0-29.

The result was the greatest-ever runs-win in a four-innings Shield decider and completed a memorable outright victory for the Bushrangers who were in all sorts of bother at 6-75 on the opening day.

James Hopes didn't bat due to a torn calf sustained on the second day of the match, meaning the Bushrangers only needed nine wickets to complete the rout.

The result handed the Vics their 28th Shield title and second in succession following their win against the Bulls in Melbourne last year.

It also confirmed the Bushrangers, who had incredibly made the last nine domestic finals in a row, have completed their most successful season in 30 years after they also clinched the Twenty20 Big Bash crown in January.

The last and only time Victoria claimed two titles in one season was back in 1979/80 and it was also the last occasion it clinched back-to-back Shield crowns.

Veteran leg-spinner Bryce McGain (4-70), who bowled unchanged from the Southern Stand End all day, was the chief destroyer for Victoria.

The 37-year-old was by far the pick of the bowlers as he constantly probed and asked questions of the batsmen and his impressive figures came off 25.4 overs, including four maidens.

John Hastings took three second-session wickets - including Queensland's last bastion of resistance Lee Carseldine (75) - to end up on 3-25, and even found himself on a hat-trick, while Darren Pattinson (2-47) was the other multiple wicket-taker.

After looking somewhat stable at 4-155 with Carseldine and Chris Hartley (29 not out) putting together a 47-run partnership, the Bulls capitulated to lose 5-27 and ended the domestic season with a whimper.

Any glimmer of hope Queensland had of salvaging a draw faded when Carseldine was trapped lbw by Hastings in the 10th over after lunch.

And Hastings was in the thick of the action again five overs later when he spectacularly caught Ben Cutting (six) off the bowling of McGain.

Cutting gave an on drive too much air and the 196cm-tall Hastings dove to his right at long on and snaffled a two-handed pearler.

But wicketkeeper Matthew Wade then said to Hastings, 'anything you can do I can do better', by producing the fielding highlight of the day.

Hastings sent a bouncer down to Chris Swan (four) who handled the delivery awkwardly by attempting a pull shot which took a severe deflection behind the stumps down the leg side.

But Wade wasn't about to give up on a potential catch as he lunged to his left, threw his glove in the air and pulled in a screamer.

The next ball Hastings trapped Luke Feldman lbw for a duck to find himself on a hat-trick.

McGain wrapped up the match the next over when he had Cameron Boyce lbw for a duck.

It didn't take long for McGain to get the first breakthrough of the day when he bowled Wade Townsend (19) in the third over.

Ryan Broad (14) survived a big appeal for lbw in McGain's next over but the Bulls opener wouldn't be so lucky five balls later when he edged a Pattinson delivery which Wade easily accepted.

And after a solid 62-run third-wicket stand between Carseldine and Chris Lynn (21), the Bulls were dealt another blow when McGain bowled the latter.

Pattinson also sent Chris Simpson packing for a duck after he had him caught behind by Wade too.
