Tons of Sri Lankan runs

Tons of Sri Lankan runs

07/26/2010 10:42:23 AM

Kumar Sangakkara and Tharanga Paranavitana both hit centuries to help put Sri Lanka in a commanding position at 2-312 at stumps on the first day of the second Test against India at Colombo.

Following a half-century from Tillakaratne Dilshan in the morning session, skipper Sangakkara and Paranavitana notched up scores of 130 not out and 100 respectively to give Sri Lanka the early initiative in the Test - it leads the three-match series 1-0.

The visitors were forced to contend with the wickets of Dilshan (54) and Paranavitana as neither pace nor spin was potent enough to do any lasting damage to the hosts' batting.

Both Sangakkara and Paranavitana reached their respective centuries within 10 overs of the start of the final session - the Sri Lankan skipper marked No.23 of his career, while the latter celebrated only his second - having scored his maiden ton in last week's 10-wicket win in Galle.

Paranavitana, however, was sent back to the pavilion on exactly 100, as Ishant Sharma knocked off his stumps to give the tourists some relief and end a 174-run stand.

The scoring rate was then pegged back slightly largely due to the efforts of spinners Pragyan Ojha and Harbhajan Singh, but both were unable to inflict any further damage.

The Lions were able to see themselves past the 300-mark late in the day - Sangakkara sending an Abhimanyu Mithun delivery to the boundary - and were eventually escorted safely home by their captain and new man Mahela Jayawardene (nine not out).

Earlier in the day - having opted to bat first - Sri Lanka continued where it had left off in the first Test with openers Dilshan and Paranavitana not giving the Indian seamers any time to settle.

Dilshan reached his 15th Test half-century with a four off Harbhajan's first delivery.

But, with Sri Lanka one short of the 100-mark, Ojha's flighted delivery lured him into the big shot, which found the safe hands of VVS Laxman at extra cover.

Paranavitana led the Sri Lankan charge after lunch, notching up his fifth Test half-century, while Sangakkara raced away towards his own 50, hitting seven boundaries along the way.

Sri Lanka looked in no trouble whatsoever throughout the second session, as the batting duo in the middle kept the scoreboard ticking with timely boundaries.

Paranavitana - who had played second fiddle to Dilshan prior to lunch - took the total past the 200-mark, and the second-wicket stand past 100, with a huge six over long-on off Harbhajan.

The duo finally left the field for tea having added 107 runs to the morning total and with a 136-run partnership to continue a very emphatic batting performance for the hosts.
