South Australian paceman Chadd Sayers was grinning from ear to ear after he completed his maiden Bupa Sheffield Shield five-wicket haul against Victoria on Tuesday.
Sayers picked up career best figures of 5-57 in the second innings against Victoria, with the 24-year-old claiming four top-order wickets before adding the final scalp of Jon Holland to complete the haul.
There were some handy names among Sayers' five wickets, with Victorian skipper Cameron White and the in-form Rob Quiney two of the high profile batsmen the baby-faced quick claimed.
Sayers, who debuted for South Australia in March last year and since then has only managed one further game at Shield level, was understandably ecstatic with his performance.
"It means a hell of a lot," Sayers said when asked about his five-wicket haul.
"I have been pushing to get into this side for a couple of years now."
"I had a rookie contract a few years back and got booted."
"So to come back and prove that I am good enough to play at this level is an amazing feeling."
Sayers said his performance with the ball in Melbourne has given him belief that he belongs at first-class level.
"This is my breakout game to be honest," he said.
"I played two games against Tassie before this and probably lacked belief in myself at this level."
"I had doubts on myself on whether I was good enough to play."
"But today and yesterday I found my role in the side and I am really enjoying it."
South Australia head into the third day against Victoria still requiring a further 247 runs for victory with Tom Cooper and Callum Ferguson at the crease and just seven wickets in hand.
But Sayers believes his side has the confidence to pull off the unlikely run chase.
"We believe we are still a chance to win," he said.
"There has been a lot of high scores in the fourth innings here, so it gives us a lot of confidence to go out, bat well and get 300."
