Victoria opener Chris Rogers' brave bid to take his place in the Sheffield Shield final has failed.
Bushrangers captain Cameron White has won the toss and elected to bat in the 2010 Shield decider against Queensland at the MCG, but Rogers will play no part because of a cracked knuckle on his left hand.
Rogers trained strongly in the lead-up to the match after missing the Bushrangers' lead-up victory over Tasmania last week.
He'd been confident of being able to bat without pain, but doubts over his ability to field and the strong prospect that the joint could fully fracture forced the selectors' hand.
The Vics have made just the one change to the XI that defeated the Tigers outright - skipper White comes in for Michael Hill, who is 12th man.
Rob Quiney, who made a dashing century for his club side St Kilda in a Premier Cricket quarter-final at the weekend, retains his place in the side and will open for the Vics with Nick Jewell.
The Bulls have left Jason Floros and Ben Dunk out of the 13-man squad they brought to Melbourne for the match.
Conditions at the MCG are fine and sunny with a top temperature of 31 degrees forecast for Wednesday.
There are intermittent showers forecast for Thursday and Friday.
