South Australia have picked two debutants in their Bupa Sheffield Shield squad to take on Victoria at Adelaide Oval starting Thursday.
Under 19s batsman Travis Head will debut along with grade cricket leg-spinner Cameron Williams.
Head joins the Redbacks on the back of a star performance at the Cricket Australia under 19 National Championship where he lead the scoring with 442 runs, including two centuries.
Twenty-year-old Williams, who was on the cusp of making his Redbacks debut before being named 12th man in the Shield clash with Western Australia in December 2011, could get his first start after impressive form in the Futures League.
The talented duo are joined by right-handed batsman James Smith, included in the team for his first Shield match of the summer after notching a staggering batting average of 75.83 for grade side West Torrens this season.
The trio replace all-rounder Dan Christian who was selected for Australia's T20 and one-day squads and the omitted pair of young batsman Tom Thornton and experienced opener Dan Harris.
With recent first-gamers Tom Stray and Carl Tietjens also retaining their spots, coach Darren Berry wants to continue to blood his next batch of potential stars. Particular given the Redbacks are winless and rooted at the foot of the Shield table with four games remaining.
However the Victorian-born coach said it was crucial to find the right balance between young and experienced talent in the side.
"A generational change was moved forward ... but I don’t think in cricket you can sweep it out and put a whole new team in there," Berry said.
"We absolutely will continue to (blood youngsters) given the position we are in but we also must blend them in with a mixture of senior players at the same time."
"We have some really good senior players and we need to gel one or two (young cricketers) – those who we think are capable of making an impression."
With four matches to play the Bushrangers still have a realistic chance of reaching the Shield final. They are in fourth position and eight points off second place.
The Bushrangers have also named a young and inexperienced side given the likes of Peter Siddle, James Pattinson and David Hussey are missing.
Footballer-turned-cricketer Alex Keath, top-order batsman Peter Handscomb and wicketkeeper Ryan Carters lead the inclusions for the Bushrangers having earned recalls following strong form in Premier Cricket.
Left-arm speedster Will Sheridan has also been selected for the first time this season after an impressive showing with Melbourne Renegades in the KFC Big Bash League.
Keen to make amends following his axing from Australia's T20 and one-day squads, Victoria captain Cameron White said he and his team-mates have a big opportunity to hit top form and impress both national and Victorian selectors late in the season.
"Playing South Australia basically four games in a row gives us the chance to really set ourselves to play well against them and gives individuals the chance to come in and impress as well," White said.
"Ryan (Carters), Alex Keath, Peter Handscomb and those sort of guys will come and get a good opportunity to do well against South Australia and really set the season up for the Bushrangers."
"Those four games will really determine where we at."
