Quiney not partying yet

History suggests Victoria has the Sheffield Shield final in its keep after it finished day three leading Queensland by 321 runs with eight wickets in hand at the MCG.

But Bushrangers opening batsman Rob Quiney believes there's no such thing as a winning lead and he hopes the Vics can bat for as long as possible, preferably well into Sunday.

It was Quiney and opening partner Nick Jewell who turned the contest the titleholder's way on Friday with a 154-run opening stand. It happens to be a competition-best for season 2009-10.

It was a base that Aaron Finch (54 not out) and David Hussey, unbeaten on 63, added to with a third-wicket stand that seems to have robbed the Bulls of all hope.

But Quiney is not counting his chickens.

"Who knows, the way their tail came out and batted today, they hit some good balls," he said in the rooms after play.

"It's still a pretty good wicket, I think, and hopefully we can keep batting."

"Let's hope 'Finchy' can get a 'final' hundred and 'Huss' can get a 'final' hundred and we'll go from there."

"It's the old cliche, one session at a time."

Despite the 27-year-old's conservative outlook, facts and figures simply don't support the Bulls' prospects of a miracle comeback.

The highest fourth-innings score ever achieved in a Shield final was Victoria's 372 against New South Wales at the SCG in 2007-08, and the highest successful run chase in the fourth innings was the Vics' much more modest 2-239, also against NSW in 1990-91.

Win, lose or draw - but preferably win - Quiney said he was extremely satisfied to have played a key role in the competition decider after what he described as a 'weird' season.

"The start was the key, I reckon, to help the bowlers out, to give them a rest and obviously build a big total," he said.

"It's always good to have an impact on any game and hopefully it's minimal when we come and tomorrow and hopefully 'Finchy' and 'Huss' can build on what they've got already."

"But it's always good to contribute somehow, especially in a final."
